What You Should Know About Lyme Disease Treatment

Caused by the bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi, Lyme disease is a disorder transmitted through bites of infected black-legged ticks. The name was derived from the town called Lime in Connecticut, USA where there were several cases that were identified way back in 1975. When suffering from this disorder, you should have Lyme disease treatment immediately before the other organs in your body are affected.

Among the infectious diseases that are tick-borne, Lyme disease is the most common in both North America and Europe. Most cases happen to those who spend much time in woodlands and those who are in heath area. These are places where there are plenty of animals carrying the tick such as deer, mice and a lot more. Outbreaks of this disorder are often during the early summer and autumn for these are the times when people get to do more outdoor activities like camping, hiking and other similar activities.

The signs and symptoms of Lyme disease show in three phases. During the early stage, you will notice that the site of the tick bite expands to form a ring of redness that is not raised. This rash is called erythema migrans and it does not happen to all patients. This is often accompanied by fatigue, stiffness of the joints and muscles, headache and swelling of the lymph nodes. This redness will resolve even without treatment in a few weeks' time but when you have not received Lyme disease treatment, the bacteria will continue to spread throughout the body. During the later phases, there will be inflammation of the heart muscle which can cause heart failure or abnormal heart rhythm. There can also be facial paralysis, abnormal sensations, confusion, arthritis and meningitis.

The most effective Lyme disease treatment is the use of antibiotics which will fight off the infection thereby helping you recover. The antibiotic will depend on your current condition so a doctor will need to examine you carefully. You will be checked if what body areas are affected so you have to be patient while you are being examined and if there are several tests done. Some common medications used for Lyme disease treatment are doxycycline, amoxicillin, penicillin and cefuroxime. For pregnant women and children who are below eight years old, doxycycline cannot be used for them so you have to check out with your doctor about other options. You may also be given pain medications but that will depend on your condition.

While there is available Lyme disease treatment, it is still better to prevent this disorder rather than suffering from all the various signs and symptoms. If possible, avoid areas where there are animals carrying ticks but if there is no way you can avoid them, there are ways on how you cannot be bitten. The best way of prevention is for you to avoid being bitten by the ticks especially if you frequent areas that have high tick population. What you do is to wear a long-sleeved shirt and tuck your pants into your socks. You should also use insect repellants and constantly check yourself for ticks.

Lyme disease is preventable and treatable so if you can avoid having it, then do so. And should you get bitten by ticks, you should immediately seek for treatment so that you can recover swiftly.

Fibromyalgia And Chronic Fatigue

Fibromyalgia is composed of multiple syndromes. The most noticeable of which are tenderness and pain in multiple places in your body. It generally causes digestive problems, sleep disorders and depression. Sometimes, Fibromyalgia and Chronic fatigue syndromes are considered to be the same illness because they overlap each other.

People suffering Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue may look normal and healthy, at the same time would complain of different symptoms. The symptoms can range from anywhere between forgetfulness, brain fog, mood swings, anger to extremes like depression! Hence, in most cases these conditions are considered as psychosomatic.

Most of these symptoms start suddenly without any prior warning or symptoms; it is sometimes accompanied along with a flu-like illness. The remarkable thing about this disease is that the underlying causes of Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue do not show up on conventional tests like thyroids, hormone, blood panels or lab tests. This makes it really difficult for the doctor to actually identify the problem itself!

Even after properly identifying the problem, most of the medical professionals cannot find the full extent of the damage; hence they treat only a part of the whole Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue symptoms. This improper treatment results in unwanted medical complications that might at times lead to serious depression. The medical professional needs to evaluate the full extent of the damage to effectively diagnose the problem.

A relatively new trend is emerging among the physicians worldwide wherein severe illnesses like CFS and fibromyalgia are treated using techniques that are long-tern. The results of these new techniques are shown to hold many promises. These are at times also referred to as long–term antibiotic therapy. Patients suffering from illnesses such as Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue have reported to experience full remissions after such long-term antibiotic treatment.

The other form of treatments recommended by doctors is exercises which are not too taxing on the body. Light exercises can be of great help in relaxing the muscles in your body. Since, both these illness are centred around the muscles and joints in your body, undertaking low intensity exercises like biking, jogging or sometimes swimming too, can help relax the joints and muscles in the body.

In any case, patients of Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue are advised to stay away from heavy or high intensity physical exercises. It can bring more harm than good and are best, if avoided.

What Are Weight Watchers Seeing?

Many obese people are non-believers. A study presented to the American College of Emergency Physicians questioned 450 randomly selected emergency department patients at the University of Florida. Fifty-three percent of overweight/obese men didn't believe their weight was a problem. Among women it was 38%. Among only obese patients 30% didn't see their weight as a health issue. In fact, 70% of the patients who had been told by their health care provider that their weight was unhealthy didn't agree. It seems that overweight/obese patients need to fear health consequences before they lose weight. They need to see the "big picture".

Obese people's brains might crave fattening foods. In a study published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation, MRI scanners monitored the brains of 5 obese and 9 non-obese people while researchers changed their blood sugar levels from normal to low. As the participants were being shown pictures of low and high-calories foods, the obese participants had less brain activity in the prefrontal cortex – where inhibition is based. That implied obese people have a harder time resisting the urge to eat – especially when their sugar levels are below normal. It seems weight loss requires more than being "levelheaded".

Moving to a better neighborhood lowers the risk of obesity. That was a finding of "Moving to Opportunity", a mid-1990's HUD program in Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City. Some single-mother households in poor neighborhoods were helped to move to areas where poverty was below 10%. Approximately 10 years later the rate of morbid obesity was about 20% lower for the women who had moved. Those women had greater access to healthy food, safer environments for outdoor exercise and less stress. The program's primary goal was to see how the move affected families. Improved health was a "move in the right direction".

Finally, liposuction may help the heart. A study presented to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons looked at 322 consecutive patients who had liposuction and/or tummy tuck. Although 78% were in the normal-to-overweight range and only 22% were obese, patients' triglyceride levels had dropped an average of 43% three months after their procedure. Triglycerides (fats in the blood) have been linked to higher risk of cardiovascular disease. There was also a decrease in white blood cells, suggesting fat removal reduces inflammation – also linked to cardiovascular disease. As more research is necessary, many are left to "weight and see".

Various Treatment Methods for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

With symptoms that are vague and hard to figure out, thoracic outlet syndrome is a condition that may take some time to diagnose and treat. It would help however to be aware of this disorder as to its causes, signs and symptoms and treatment methods to help you deal with it.

Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) happens when the superior thoracic outlet is compressed. This outlet is a neurovascular bundle that passes between the anterior and middle scalenes at the base of the neck. It is more common in women, occurring between the ages 20 to 50. The most common cause of thoracic outlet syndrome is trauma, which can be sudden or repetitive. With sudden trauma, there is a fracture in the clavicles that can be caused by accidents. Repetitive trauma on the other hand happens to those who have to do certain tasks over and over again using the wrists and the arms. Those who are at risk for developing TOS are people who are in non-ergonomic postures for several hours working on computers, athletes who often have to raise their arms above, electricians, musicians and rock climbers.

The signs and symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome depend on the certain type of TOS. For neurogenic TOS, there is severe muscle wasting at the base of the thumb which is called the Gilliatt-Sumner hand. There will also be a dull pain at the neck, the shoulders and the armpits as well as numbness at the hands and the forearms. For the vascular type of TOS, the affected arm is usually paler and is cooler to touch from that of the unaffected arm. This is often accompanied by pain, numbness, a tingling sensation and absent or weak pulse. For non-specified TOS, the most common sign would be a dull pain at the neck, the armpits and the shoulders. The pain usually gets worse when you do activities, and is triggered by accidents or injuries.

For most people with thoracic outlet syndrome, the treatment will usually be through the conventional ways and there are only few who will need surgical interventions. One of the most common treatments is the use of ice and heat. Ice packs can be used to help decrease the inflammation of the injured or sore muscles. Heat on the other hand will improve the circulation on the affected areas which will also bring relief. It is also important to maintain a proper posture since poor posture can actually aggravate the signs and symptoms of TOS.

Stretching is also a way of relieving TOS as long as it is done properly. This will help reduce the compression of the thoracic cavity, help decrease the impingement of the blood vessels and nerves as well as help realign the muscles, bones and ligaments that are causing TOS. Nerve gliding is also an effective treatment method for thoracic outlet syndrome. To do this, you will need extend the affected arm towards the side and tilt your head to the opposite side. You will feel a gentle pull at the affected side when you do this. If you need the help of a physical therapist in doing the said exercises, then it would be better so that he can ensure that the activities you are doing are correctly done.

Treating TOS as early as possible is very important so that it will not get worse and will lead to complications. Be aware of the different signs and symptoms so that you will be able to identify if you are suffering from thoracic outlet syndrome or not.

November Is American Diabetes Month

Diabetes is a severe illness that affects nearly 25.8 million or 8.3% of the American population. Its incidence has been increasing exponentially with every passing year. In the year 2007 alone, almost 250,000 deaths were attributed to Diabetes - directly or indirectly. Sadly, this figure has been rising every year. However, you can contribute to the cause and help to create awareness by wearing awareness ribbon pins during American Diabetes Month this November.

First of all, it should be realized that amongst the 25.8 million people who are affected by Diabetes, nearly one third of them are not aware of it. Either intentionally or unintentionally, they do not take the occurrence of Diabetes seriously, making the disease's severity only worse. As such, it is our responsibility to make people conscious about it. You can increase awareness by wearing red ribbons and by educating people in your community about this condition. What you do can help to save lives from potential risk.

The American Diabetes Month is filled with events all around the country that not only call for people who are affected by the disease but also people who do not have it as well. You should realize that 79 million people have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes; a condition in which some of the symptoms of diabetes are observed. All they need to do is avoid factors that only speed up the progress of diabetes. During Diabetes Awareness Month, it's important to educate these people about what they can do to prevent contracting the disease which in the medium and long term can save their lives.

Diabetes is not only a deadly disease, but it is also one which can cause the occurrence of other life-threatening conditions, such as blindness, heart diseases, foot ulcers, chronic pain, and even kidney failure. Moreover, the occurrence of heart strokes is often worsened when it occurs in conjunction with high blood sugar.

On the other hand, people suffering from diabetes often become quite depressed. Not being able to do what you want or physical limitations, sometimes make people victim of clinical and chronic depression. In November, you can show to these people that there's hope and that you care by taking part of this national crusade.

Whether you have diabetes or not, it's very important to support this cause and help to spread awareness. There are many ways you can team up for this campaign, from volunteering, donations, events or simply by wearing red ribbon pins or displaying Cure Diabetes stickers during the month of November, it's up to you how you want to take action!
